Michèle Aerden

Michèle is a dentist and was president of the IDF World Dental Federation from 2005 to 2007. She was the first woman to be elected president of this non-profit organization and worked to promote oral health within the World Health Organization and around the world.

Michèle Aerden was born in Hasselt, Belgium. She is married to Guy Warlop since 1966 and has two children, two daughters-in-law and five grandchildren. At the age of 20, Michèle started and ran a small business with 13 employees in haute couture. He then closed his company and began his dental studies at the age of 28. In 1977, Michèle graduated with distinction in dentistry studies at the ULB, Université Libre de Bruxelles.

Michèle works at her own private dental clinic in Brussels, Belgium. She has been very involved in the Belgian Dental Association. She was vice president and president of the Chambres Syndicales Dentaires. Her first international participation was as a Belgian delegate to the IDF. She then served as Chair of the Committee of Individual Members and as a member of the Ethics Committee from 1994 to 1997. At the IDF European Regional Organization, she was the founder and leader of the working group on women in dentistry and a member of the working group on social security in Europe. She became a member of the IDF Council in 1997, the second woman to be nominated for that position. He served as a member of the Committee on Developing Countries from 1998 to 2001 and was a member of the group’s strategy. She founded Women Dentists Worldwide in 2001; this group published the Kuala Lumpur Declaration.

I admire her very much because she is a great empowered and confident woman, she has achieved many things nationally and internationally, achieving being in the IDF is one of the greatest achievements we can have as dentists. I like her very much because she is a woman who also fulfils her roles as mother, wife and her beloved profession. She shows that there are no barriers for women in the world of dentistry.
